"Ugh where to start with this one. I’ve been devouring the books in this series. They aren’t great, but so far most of them have been fun fast reads with good stories. This one teetered over the edge into being almost unreadable.

List of gripes
1 The main character delves deeper into the realms of unbearable Mary Sue. Not merely in her looks, overblown super powers, but also in her unbelievably moral personality. She makes a number of choices that fall under the category of too stupid to live. This is supposed to be set in a brutal world where someone would almost certainly take advantage and kill her, Aside from occasionally being captured and endless moral hand wringing Ari puts herself through she faces almost no consequences for her actions.

2. Es is a horribly written character. There absolutely needs to be more representation of transgender people in young adult novels, and if she had any inkling of personality I might like her. Es is transgender, she works as a waitress, she speaks with a fake southern accent, and she has a boyfriend. That’s it that is all there is to her. If you look throughout the past novels all of the things she says are just bland statements to support the main character, she has zero personality. I hate that a transgender character was created and just used as a prop to show how loving and accepting the main character is. There was opportunity in this book for Es to actually play a role in the plot this novel, or at least for us to get a glimpse of who she really is or what she thinks. But no, poor Es’s only defining characteristic is her gender.

3. I signed up for a book that was supposed to be The Bachelorette: Queen of Hell edition. Sadly this did not have much in the way of fun dates, or over the top man drama; just angst. Like, it’s clear which guy she wants, but couldn’t she at least have some time to meet the other suitors? Where is the fun?

4. Seriously this book had zero fun. Stupid unrealistic fantasy is something these authors can do well, they fell short when they tried to make a novel that was so serious.

5. The action scenes were poorly written. Everything is jumbled together. You could almost feel them rushing through the sequences and tripping over things as they try to get to an ending.

6. I am still pissed off that every chapter begins with a quote from a character in the book. It’s obnoxious

Yes I’m still reading the next book, let’s hope they work their way back to a respectable three stars."

  • I want to punch myself in the face for putting off reading this one for so long! I think it's safe to say that this is my new favorite in this series [followed by VG, then MS]. It was so exciting, fast-paced, engaging, and twisty-turny even up until the very end.

Seriously, though THAT ENDING!!!! I thought the cliffy from MS was bad, but this one definitely knocks it out of the park for so many reasons that I will mention in a spoiler. *******But BEWARE it is definitely a spoiler if you haven't read this one yet!********
    ********************************************************************************************************************
[We find out that Asher has been working with Metsi to capture Arianna and Levi in order to gain the power of the Primal One (who I think is somehow linked to Tavian). We also find out that ARI IS FREAKING PREGGO BY FEN (which if you remember is a big freaking deal when it comes to Ari choosing the next King!!!). And at the end, the authors like to casually mention that btw Asher is actually chained in a hard-to-find dungeon and was being impersonated by Lucian, who is thereby actually working with Metsi to gain the powers of the Primal One. NBFD!!!]
    *******************************************************************************END SPOILER

We also meet so many new people in this novel as well, some good and some annoying as hell. We get to know Dean so much better, and I was surprised at how much I came to love him. There is definitely more to him than just his amazing good looks and hot body--he is sweet, funny, cares about nature, and of course is gorgeous. The scene with him and the Mirror of Idis nearly broke my heart! We also meet Tavian Gray, who is Kayla's beau. I love them together (and he sounds sexy as hell), but I am a bit miffed that they get together after about TWO DAYS of knowing each other while I've been over here waiting for Fen and Ari to make love for like THREE FREAKING MONTHS. Don't mind me, I just love my Fen.

Overall, if you have loved the previous two books then you will be blown away by this sequel! Seriously guys, if you haven't started this series yet, I cannot recommend it enough. We learn so many new things in this book, and it leaves me SO STOKED for the finale!

  • The wait was worth it!!! Full of action, suspense, romance and secrets! The characters have grown and evolved some have become friends and some enemies. In previous books Ari's allies were Asher and Fen and now we can add Dean! Dean is a surprise, he is not as shallow as we initially thought. Levi, well dang it I know just because he is tied up and flayed does not mean he won't get away. Now Lucian and Metsi, that was a surprise!! And poor Asher!! So happy about Fen and Ari finally having some "me" time. What will happen now that Ari is with child, I wonder if she knows it yet? And how will Fen find and rescue her. Karpov Kinrade you have done it once again!!! You rock!!
