Taking Woodstock is the funny, touching, and true story of Elliot Tiber, the man who was instrumental in arranging the site for the original Woodstock Concert. Elliot, whose parents owned an upstate New York motel, was working in Greenwich Village in the summer of 1969. He socialized with the likes of Truman Capote, Tennessee Williams, and photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, and yet somehow managed to keep his gay life a secret from his family. Then on Friday, June 28, Elliot walked into the Stonewall Inn―and witnessed the riot that would galvanize the American gay movement and enable him to take stock of his own lifestyle. And on July 15, when Elliot learned that the Woodstock Concert promoters were unable to stage the show in Wallkill, he offered to find them a new venue. Soon he was swept up in a vortex that would change his life forever.

"Elliot Tiber's book, TAKING WOODSTOCK, is a funny memoir about his days as a young man and his involvement in helping Woodstock happen.

He's witty with self-deprecating humor and brutally honest about his life with his crazy family, being in the closet and his sexual adventures, and the experience of being at the epicenter of the Woodstock festival.

Tiber's family owned a run-downed motel in Bethel, NY and he was friends and neighbors with Max Yasgur (owner of the farm where Woodstock took place) and suggested Max's farm to producer Michael Lang. He was also president of the White Lake Chamber of Commerce and had a permit to hold art and music festivals. Anyway, through a series of funny turns in the road and being at the right place at the right time, Tiber becomes witness to and involved in two historic events in 1969: Woodstock and Stonewall Inn (Gay bar that was raided and kicked off riots that started the Gay Liberation movement).

He encounters a bunch of odd characters along the way including famous people like Truman Capote, Rock Hudson, and Robert Mapplethorpe--all the while being hammered by his Jewish mother--and has a life altering experience with Woodstock.

The book is a quick read and if there are any faults it's that it doesn't contain any pictures. But otherwise very enjoyable."

  • After seeing the Ang Lee film I was inspired to read the original memoir, and I'm so glad I did. I was too young for the original Woodstock but remember some of the earth-shaking changes that happened during that time. Elliot Tiber was a witness and an amazing chronicler. As a mid-30s closeted gay man (as was a necessity when homosexuality was still illegal) he was present at Stonewall in June 1969 and 2 months later was critical to the creation of Woodstock. Fascinating times but what stood out for me in the memoir is that it reads much more like a coming-of-age novel with some very profound and moving insights as Elliot struggles with conflicting challenges and growing awareness as to who he authentically was. I was so taken with this amazing man's story I had to read the follow up, "After Woodstock", also excellent. Definitely worth your time.
  • Saw the film by Ang Lee and I highly recommend that. Read Mike Lang's book on the same subject and I highly recommend that which has a somewhat different perspective. And I read this which the movie follows closely and I loved this. It brings the love and beauty of Woodstock to life and lets you in on an amazing and sometimes scary backstory. The beginning dotes a little more than I cared about Eliots early sex life - this wasn't really in the movie and I think the title could have been a little different because of this. But that stuff is ok and the Woodstock stuff is excellent.
  • I enjoy the description of the Woodstock festival given in this book. It is fun to read about all that was described about Woodstock since I did not get to experience the festival in person.
  • Although people have said some things weren't true, I still enjoyed the story and getting to know the author Elliott. He is an inspiration to me. Do not be afraid to be yourself and love yourself.
  • This book made me laugh. It's full of rich characters and absurd situations, all allegedly true. Tiber doesn't flinch from describing the sordid things he did in his journey to find himself and happiness. The name dropping is jaw dropping - seems Tiber was in all the right places at all the right times (even if not for the right reasons). I had to wonder if I was being put on, but then just gave in to the wonder of the events themselves. Like "Running With Scissors", if Tiber's stories weren't true you wanted them to be! A light and breezy read that reveals another side to the Woodstock legend - the days leading up to it - and how one man saw the world (and himself) change for the better. Can't wait to see the movie.
  • I had more laugh-out-loud moments with this book than any I've read in years. I also learned how Woodstock happened to happen, something I'd known nothing about (beyond Max Yasgur), even having been there (and yes, it changed my life). What I didn't expect was one of the most poignant accounts I've yet read of a boy's coming to grips with his being gay - and, later, a first-hand report of the Stonewall riots. Turns out Elliot Tiber (nee Teichberg) was there when it started! Who would've guessed that Stonewall and Woodstock were joined at the hip? This is an invaluable document of our once-upon-a-times, and a delight to read. I saw the movie, and while I liked it quite a bit, it doesn't do justice to the book. By all means, read it.

  • If I could give this 10 stars, I would! I was a pre-teen during Woodstock so I remember a lot of the news reports (if I had just been a little older, I would have been there!). This was an excellent account of not only the planning and wonderful chaos of Woodstock, but you fall in love with Elliott through the telling. His life will make you laugh and cry. Everyone should read this -- especially the young people of today who have no idea what we felt during that time. This is an incredible book! I never re-read books, but I will with this one because I truly felt like I was there.
