"In an industry and culture that encourages us to be more and more self-focused for our own personal gain, Mark's book is a fresh and necessary perspective that is desperately needed." ~ TobyMac

College freshmen are lectured about networking on their first day of class. Young professionals race to another boring party so they can be seen and shake hands with someone who might be able to help them-just like the business books and podcasts have instructed. Creatives are chronically obsessed with and depressed by the number of likes, views and followers on their social media. Anyone embarking upon a new path or business venture has heard the key to success lies in networking-who you know, and how they can get you ahead. But, according to Mark H. Maxwell, this is not only untrue, but potentially dangerous to those hoping to succeed.

"Very disappointed this wasn’t advertised as a religious book because that’s exactly what it is. The articles I read that touted the book were very well crafted; making sure to leave out the religious aspect. It worked. They suckered me in for a quick purchase. Shame on me for not reading a chapter before I bought it."

  • Wanna get ahead in life? Then this book is for you. The perspective shift is really as easy as just serving people not trying to “play the game of business.” Asking God and listening to Holy Spirit to guide you with words to speak to others throughout your life in business, marriage, relationships, everything you do! Mark Maxwell has serious insight because he lived through extremely hard times and choices that left him empty. He made the decision to leave behind the life he used to lead and focus on the steps God has chosen for him with new assignments everyday. Great book! I recommend this to anyone who will listen so that their life can be transformed.
  • I really enjoyed this book. It helped me to re-focus on what is really important in developing contacts and relationships with others, whether for personal or business purposes. If I am "networking" solely for the purpose of what I can get from others, I am likely to miss what is of utmost importance the other person. By being "other focused," I open a gateway into being truly relevant to the lives of other people--- not ultimately for my temporal purposes, but for God's eternal purposes. If my life, in relationship with others, is lived out in this "other focused" way, and if I am then willing to serve the needs of others before my own as God leads, "success" will not be something I will have to try to "achieve"---but it will become the increased "fruit" of my life---and that is true success.
  • This book doesn’t just disrupt social media networking, it blows it up! You must read it, if you are a creative endeavoring in the field of music, film, tv, or the arts in general. Mark Maxwell, an entertainment attorney who doesn’t bite, in fact he has a heart. A heart for God, the arts, and for young aspiring artists. His views on “the ills” of networking and its impact on the creation of great art are evocative. Are we destined for a world that never produces another Michael Angelo or a Bob Dylan? Not if Mr. Maxwell has anything to say about it and he surely does.

  • This book spoke to me because of what I see in my own home and my work place. My sons trying to make there way thru social media and grasping to obtain recognition thru networking. In the corporate world they teach you without "Knowing Someone" it will be impossible to break thru. I found that if I look back at my greatest successes in life, whether it be personal or career its because of serving. This book helped me reflect on how my biggest points of success were thru serving others and I will hope to grow my career going forward because of the solid points this great book makes. Thanks Mr Maxwell for shining a light on a much needed area in the work place today... Bravo!!!
  • This book turns everything you think you know about getting ahead completely upside down. It will challenge the voices we all know too well about how to achieve visibility and opportunity and instead offer an authentic and practical way to grow. A way that doesn't leave you feeling dirty, like you're using everyone around you. A way that tunes into the needs of others and puts them first. A way forward through serving. A way that suggests the talents and gifts you have are not just for your success, but they are to make the world a better place, and they start with real relationship. Mark endears you immediately, through his wide array of interesting life experiences, his hardcore music geekness and his inspiring vulnerability. You won't regret taking him up on his invitation into a more meaningful way of impacting the world.
  • Networking Kills is a much-needed guide, especially for those starting out in the entertainment (or any) business, but also for those with more experience who have been burned by the traditional networking cycle. Mark Maxwell’s charming, down-to-earth style and interesting anecdotes make this book read more like a story than a manual for success. And it is that by using service-based motivation in his own life experiences, Maxwell proves that we reap what we sow. He turns networking on its head, showing that business based on serving others out of authentic relationships benefits the soul, not just the bank account. A must-read for any young entrepreneur, and a gentle reminder to those of us who are further down the road.

  • I bought this book because the Lord had me building relationships instead of networking and that seemed to fit. Not knowing when I picked it up that Mark was a devout Christian and fellow music lover I was totally hooked. I read it in 2 days and have told several others that it is a must read!! Thank you for sharing your wisdom
