Fragments World War II A Kid in Brooklyn Walt Dierks 9781644242698 Books Reviews

  • I usually don't purchase memoirs, but this one caught my attention. Each chapter is a short story, or fragments of
Mr. Dierks memory of his childhood in Brooklyn during WWll. Some of the "fragments" are out right funny, while others are a appreciation of the integrity and trust people put in one and other during that time. One fragment that really struck me was when Mr. Dierks father was looking for a business to buy. He came across a deli, the owner got called to war, and the "deal" was, if the owner makes it back(alive) from the war, he gets his business back. The deal was sealed with a simple handshake.
I like Mr. Dierks style of writing. I look forward to see what he brings in the future. I highly recommend this book!
  • Mr. Dierk's book is a true joy to read. Not only is it interesting for those of us who lived during the War years, but it is a fascinating account of what was happening in America during that time. I enjoyed reading about the rationing, the scrap drives and other activities we youngsters participated in during the war. Walter has a simple, relaxed style of writing that is easy and fun to read. He tells me it would be a nice bathroom book. That will work, but also it is the kind of book that one can read when there is only a moment available such as on the bus or train, in the airport or best of all, in bed. I keep my copy on the bedside table and enjoy "visiting" with Walt just before I go to sleep.
Read it. You'll enjoy it too!
  • Walt Dierks was only nine years old when Pearl Harbor was attacked but he has clear memories of that day. In his book, Fragments, World War II A Kid in Brooklyn, he shares with us those memories and many more over the next four years of his life, during World War II.

Mr. Dierks' true stories are enlightening and entertaining and some are laugh out loud funny. I appreciated that along with his "fragments" he supplied the reader with information about what was happening with the war effort and timelines of events.

This book is well worth reading on both entertainment and historical levels.
